What is a Bullhead Catfish?
Bullhead catfish is one of the most popular types of fish. It is extremely common for people to accidentally catch these fish while out on the lake, but there are plenty of fishermen that set out to catch them as well. They are easy to catch and taste delicious when properly prepared.
Appearance
The appearance of this fish is similar to the appearance of a Flathead catfish, but there are a couple of distinct differences. Both types of fish have a tail that is not forked, but the Bullhead catfish does not have the same flat head that gave the Flathead its name.
Bullhead catfish are commonly black or brown in color, and they are one of the smaller versions of catfish. One of the largest ones caught was approximately eight pounds.
One of the easiest ways to identify this fish is by its lack of scales. They have smooth skin, much like the walking catfish.
Location
This species of fish calls much of North America it’s home. It can survive in murky waters, clean water, water with low oxygen and enjoys the bottom of streams. It does tend to prefer warmer waters, but that is the only preference this fish seems to have.
Diet
They are not picky when it comes to their diet. Instead, they are similar to the garbage disposal in the fact that they will eat almost anything, and take almost any bait. Most can be found enjoying a feast of:
- Smaller fish
- Dead fish
- Dead animals
- Any living animal smaller than themselves
- Sewage
- Snails
- Vegetables
Catching Them
Bullhead catfish come out when the sun goes down. They prefer to hunt and enjoy swimming in the dark, much like other catfish. Fishermen have discovered that anything works as bait, and these fish can be found in most North American lakes. These fish are one of the easiest types of fish to catch during a relaxing night on the boat.
