The catfish are freshwater fish species found in parts of North and South America, Africa and Asia. The name catfish was inspired by their barbells which are similar to cat whiskers. Catfish are resilient and easy to breed in private ponds. The haddock are saltwater fish species found in the Atlantic Ocean close to the northern parts of Europe; haddocks can also be found in parts of the ocean close to regions such as Canada and North America. Haddock are part of the Codfish species classified as one of the averagely sized cod species we can find in the ocean.
Catfish vs Haddock
Catfish can be found in rivers, lakes and other freshwater sources; they are caught daily by anglers who go out to hunt for them. The ease at which catfish are found around cities with rivers and lakes make them popular among fish sellers in the market. Catfish are also known to live in brackish waters were the murky nature of the river or lake provide a covering for protection and to allow them to scavenge for food and hunt prey (usually smaller fish species).
Haddocks can be caught by anglers who head out to the ocean on fishing expeditions. They are usually exported to other parts of Europe and the world because of their somewhat restricted location in the fishing map. The haddocks can be caught with the use of fishing lines, or fishing nets which are cast in areas they are known to live in the water. Catfish, on the other hand, can be caught with the use of fishing rigs, and not necessarily with fishing nets when the anglers are fishing in rivers with average depth.
Regarding their sizes, the catfish are usually bigger than the haddocks. The females of both species grow bigger than the males. Catfish can weigh as much as 220 lbs., while the haddock are known to average weigh about 19 lbs.
Catfish and haddocks have a remarkable commercial value. They are farmed for their meat and sold to restaurants as well as individuals who cook need them for domestic consumption. Catfish and haddock are rich sources of protein and other essential vitamins.
Catfish are sold at a cheaper rate than the haddock fish species. This is mainly because it is easier to find catfish around the regular rivers and lakes in the cities. However, haddocks may need to be imported from farther regions if they cannot be found in the saltwater regions in a particular area. The delicious taste of haddocks makes it necessary to import and add them to the menu in restaurants.
Anglers have also mentioned that the haddocks are more evasive than catfish. It is easier to lure a catfish and experience more bites when catfishing. This is because the catfish have a diverse food preference and they can be said to have a good appetite. However, haddocks which feed on mostly smaller fish species in the ocean are more evasive. Anglers mostly rely on the use of live bait to lure and catch haddocks when using fishing lines.
