When using frozen shad catfish bait, it is important to remember that bigger is always better. As the bait thaws, it can get mushy. The texture of this makes it difficult to keep the bait on the hook. Fishermen that use smaller shad for bait often discover that the bait will not stay on their hook in the beginning, or it falls off in the middle of them fishing. This can make small shad completely useless as catfish bait.
